Avilla- High School

“Avi, aren't you ready yet?” Lizzie threw herself down on my bed, exasperated. I got the feeling she was only going to the Valentine’s Day dance because the rest of us wanted to. We’d spent the last few weeks planning our dresses, hair, and makeup. I had decided on a wine red halter dress that flowed to the floor in silk. The whole dress was covered in sequins, and there was a slit up the side that ended just above the knee. It was a little lower cut than what I was used to, but it was Valentine’s Day. I glanced at Lizzie who was wearing a sky blue tulle skirt that flared out ending at the knee. Her top was a silk blue shirt that was a couple of shades darker than her skirt. Its sleeves ended at her elbows but had slits to the shoulder. She put her silvery blonde hair in a simple, sleek ponytail. The color of her dress enhanced her blue eyes, which were studying me in the mirror.

“What are you doing with your hair tonight?” she asked.

“Nothing,” I said. I planned on letting my auburn- brown tresses flow down my back without messing with them much. They curled naturally, and I figured that was enough.

“Good,” Lizzie stood up and grabbed my hand. “Come on then. The others are waiting.”

I followed her outside, where sure enough, Jules, Annabelle, and Jason were all waiting. Jules was wearing a long purple dress with thin straps that criss-crossed in back. It flowed to her feet in silky waves. Her dark brown hair was up in a half ponytail with crystal barrettes on the side. Annabelle was wearing a lavender strapless dress that swelled from her waist in a cascade of tulle. Her black hair was tied in an elegant ballerina bun with a few tendrils falling down her neck in tiny curls. Jason was wearing a black suit, and like always, he matched to Annabelle, with a light purple tie. He was holding two corsages, and as Lizzie and I walked up, he handed them to us.

“Oh, Jason,” I breathed. “It’s beautiful. Thank you.”

He smiled sheepishly.

We made it to the dance just in time to catch the second song. Most everyone was already there, and we had a good time dancing together. A slow song came on, and Jason bowed to Jules.

“I believe you have the first dance tonight?” he said in a mock British accent.

We all laughed, and Jules grabbed his hand. We had all decided to share Jason tonight, and he was having a great time milking the supposed prestige of walking in with four dates. Lizzie, Annabelle and I rolled our eyes and walked to get some punch.

“Avilla, would you like to dance with me?”

I turned around and gaped at the boy standing in front of me. Jerry Reynolds wasn’t Malcolm Vasser, but he was still incredibly cute. His blonde hair fell into his eyes a little, and he had dreamy sky blue eyes.
